Strategy

How can you improve your TCF Canada reading score?

Read the question before the text, keep to 90 seconds per question and watch for distractors that reuse words from the document.

01

Read the question first

Know what you are looking for before you read the document.

02

90 seconds per question

60 minutes ÷ 39 questions. Go fast on early questions to keep time for C1–C2 texts.

03

Spot constraint words

« avant le », « obligatoire », « uniquement », « sauf » change the meaning.

04

Beware of distractors

Wrong options often copy words from the text; the right one rephrases the meaning.

FAQ

TCF Canada reading comprehension: frequently asked questions

How many questions are in the TCF Canada reading test?

The TCF Canada reading comprehension test has 39 multiple-choice questions to answer in 60 minutes, which leaves about 90 seconds per question. Each question has 4 options and only one is correct.

What reading score do I need for NCLC 7?

You need 453–498 out of 699 for NCLC 7 in reading. NCLC 8 requires 499–523, NCLC 9 requires 524–548 and NCLC 10 or higher requires 549–699, according to the IRCC equivalency table.

Do the reading questions get harder during the test?

Yes. Questions are ordered by increasing difficulty, from simple A1 documents such as signs and short notices to C2 texts such as opinion articles, so time spent on the first questions should stay short.

How does the learning plan choose my next reading test?

Each reading action in your plan has a target score based on your NCLC goal. If you reach it, the action is marked as done; if not, the plan adds a different reading test so you never repeat the one you just took.

Can I practise TCF Canada reading for free?

Yes. The free reading tests listed at the top of this page are open without a subscription and include a score and answer explanations.
